I've used Lonely planet as a back-up book for one trip. This time, I'm trying to plan my trip with it and finding it difficult because the book seems to separate things that should be together. I'm not explaining it very well, but the itineraries are all up at the front, and then you have to pick through the book going back and forth trying to find those places. I'm finding that I want to use the internet and my map to find hotels rather than the book! It would not be something you would want to carry with you on a trip, either, in my opinion. On my first two trips I used Rick Steves books, he has a good layout to his books, and excellent maps, but he bugs me and I found his opinion on quality, value, interesting to be a mismatch. so I don't care to purchase his product - his itinerary map is on his website and I did check that. I have used Fodor's probably with a little better organizational success than with this book, but their book was not as up-to-date as this one. I don't hate this book, but I'm not impressed so far. The layout makes me not want to read it.

There are others out there, but none of them is going to give you the combination of encyclopedic coverage and critical insight that this guide does. The authors have been refining this volume over many editions and it shows.Listings are numerous, and there are suggestions for a wide range of budgets and tastes. Recommended sights and itineraries reveal a profound knowledge of the country, its history, and its culture. There's a terrific chapter on Berlin and its many attractions. Actually, I'm a crazy historic architecture fan, and Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig and Nuremberg, being largely reconstructed cities, were always a hard sell for me. This guide lays is out for you: If you come to Germany and you miss these places, big mistake. Take the recommendations seriously and you'll be guaranteed an authentic, rewarding experience.The maps are numerous, but they can be confusing, cluttered up with all those points and numbers.I would say that this guide has a slightly more cultural bent than is typical for Lonely Planet. Outdoor attractions aren't ignored, but they do seem to be concentrated around winter and lake resorts and river tours. There's not as much focus on eco-touring as some travelers might want. It's easy to completely overdose on churches and castles, and if that's your thing, by all means. I'd like a guide to offer some balance, some way to escape what can be cultural sensory overload. This guide could do it better.Minor quibbles aside, I think this is the best single-volume travel guide to the country currently published.
Heavy on museums, churches, and Jewish sites. Germany is so much more. I went there for a week and did not do one of those things, and had a blast. Lacking in this book is a fair rounded review of bars/clubs. For instance, in Cologne, the closest cool bars (other than some dumb irish jazz club) are described as being on the other side of the city form the Dom. The truth is there are more than 30 bars/clubs within 5min walking distance from it. Also, in East Berlin the cool out of this world experience is closed now. And for the ferry boat up the rhine tour, it isn't mentioned that the most times you can get off and back on are 3 times, assuming you get the first boat that leaves Mainz at 8:45am, so pick your castles wisely. Otherwise, helpful book. Used it in conjunction with trip advisor to put together a really killer time. You can trust the hostels they list, was quite happy with them.
The content of the guide is quite useful, but the navigation is horrible. For example, let's say I am interested in "food in Munich". I have to go through the following procedures:step 1: go to table of contentsstep 2: click on "ON THE ROAD"step 3: click on "Munich"step 4: click on Eating.Suppose that I like the 1st recommendation "Fraunhofer" and I want to find out where it is. I have no wifi, so i just click on the offline map and I arrive at an incomprehensible map because all the locations (food, drinks, hotels, sights) are indicated by numbers. To find out the number that belong to Fraunhofer, I have to go back to step 3, flip through quite a lot of pages until I see another table of content for central Munich, where Fraunhofer has number 53 under the listing of "Eating". Can't the publisher just put the number besides the restaurant's name?A worse situation: imagine the pain that I have to go through when I want to find out more about a recommendation in the last region. In this case, I have to flip through descriptions about five regions of Munich.What if you are around, says the Olympiapark, and you want to find out about the region. I would have expected a submenu that link from the main table of content for Munich, but no such link is present. I have to go back to step 3, flip through a lot of pages to reach the section on Olympiapark.An e-version has the advantage of making navigation simple, but no such simplicity is present for this e-guide (imagine browsing a website and you have to click on a lot of hyperlink s to find the information that you want). Avoid it if possible.
Terrific for overview, but as with all the Lonely Planet publications the details are poorly organized, descriptions that relate to maps can be 10 pages apart with a legend buried between them, making it difficult to quickly navigate. Also, the tight binding of the book makes it close as you're trying to use it. Hey, I get it - it's a big country and there's a lot to cover, and we don't want to lug a coffee table book around, but it can be a frustrating experience to use in the heat of travel. Definitely read thoroughly before using. I think all the info you'd want is there, it's just hard to pull it all together. If you want a little more editorializing try Rick Steves books. I actually like to have both.
