I grew up in central California, learning to fish in the sloughs, camp in the hills and to name all the kinds of wild flowers. This book has brought all that back for me. California is a wonderful place today, no question. State of Change: Forgotten Landscapes of California reminds us that California in the past was one of the most spectacular places on Earth. A time gone, but thanks to this book not quite forgotten.A few points:- Well written text, quite evocative. But, not an abundance science which I think is OK. This is not a naturalist guide, but there is plenty of naturalist stuff.- Some environmental leanings are exposed but this is definitely not a politically slanted book. (So sorry to relate nature with politics, but that's the times we live in.)- I like the author's art, it really brings the old landscape to life. And reminds me of some of the landscapes I recall from the mid-20th century.
"A state of change" deeply satisfies the longings of many naturalists and paleontologists to see the world as it was before the massive changes in human population, land management, and species diversity of the last century. I spend a good deal of my time as a professor trying to get my students to think of the world as in a constant `state of change'--not just because of us, but also because of climate cycles and the longer-term processes of evolution. Laura Cunningham's book is a feast of this kind of thinking.Just what were the familiar vistas of the modern age like only a century or two ago, much less before European contact? How has the landscape been shaped by processes that acted before our thumbprint on the environment became overwhelming? How did ecosystems work when there were bears digging up bulbs, forming wallows, feasting on the acorn crop and uprooting ground squirrels and giant kangaroo rats? How did condors work when there were abundant gray whales washing up on the beach and a megafauna of Pleistocene animals roaming the coastal plain? This book treats mainly pre-colonial California, which was still greatly shaped by native American land use practices. But there are hints at the earlier rule of nature when pronghorns were shaped by the now extinct American cheetah, and sloths as well as herds of bison and camels structured the native grasslands and shrub lands. The book is illustrated with many paintings of scenes from prehistory--some out of our modern experience like images of grizzlies under the oaks in the Bay Area, and some only slightly beyond modern memory, like the salmon runs on the Sacramento River. Unlike many books about "deep time" Cunningham does not crowd her paintings with unlikely crowds of animals but offers up snapshots of scenes we might see if we were transported several hundred years into the past. The author's vision is not, however, just to illustrate the past through many fine paintings and sketches, but also to meditate on what her experience in California habitats--some native, some heavily modified by development and exotic introductions--says about how these landscapes and iconic animals and plants worked in ancient ecological systems.Much of this description and interpretation is successful--particularly her chapters on bears, oaks, condors and salmon. There, her lyrical melding of her own experience and her exploration of the scientific literature work to great effect to show how these species shaped past environments. Other chapters, such as the one on grasses, have a bit too much about where she found these plants growing and not enough on how those species functioned in a world of frequent fire, grazing by native animals, and the powerful seasonal cycles of rain and drought. This criticism is but a quibble, however, since the book yields so much of great value for one questing at what California used to be like, and, if we are willing to try to live a little lighter on the land, could be again.I understand that chapters on the Mojave Desert and Great Basin were excised in the final version of this book. That's too bad since there are great stories to tell there. I fervently hope that those chapters will be forged into another book, some day soon...
Heyday Books always publishes remarkably high quality books, and this one is no exception! This naturalist's view of California's past, (as compared to its present), along with her view of the meaning of these changes in the state's ecology, are beautiful, informative, and powerful. This is the grand story of an incredibly beautiful state, and the author's abilities as an artist just add to the beauty. Her drawings and paintings are very well done and they reinforce the facts and insights in the book's text. As Ms. Cunningham says in her introduction, she assumed her role as an artist-naturalist, in order to lay out before us an "historical ecology" of California.Definitely 5 full stars...
I bought this as a gift for my mom who works has always had a personal and professional interest in California native plants. She also is interested in California history. I'd never seen her sit down and read a book like this one every evening, cover to cover; or praise a book of this type so much to me.
Insightful, well researched and huge bibliography, yet dominated by years of personal experience and wanderings throughout the State, this book is now my favorite resource to imagine a healthy ecological future - based entirely on how habitats have actually changed and which California native plants will be best adapted for the future. Bravo !
Great book on the evolution of California before it was a state. Lovely drawings make this a must for folks that love the outdoor environment of California.
This is an amazing experience, and the author masterfully takes the reader to various landscapes--then and now--reconstructing the past using what we know of nature today. You do not need to be a biologist to enjoy this book. Anybody with a general appreciation of nature will come away with even more knowledge, and a more acute awareness of the natural wonders we should protect today, and the ones we have already lost. The author's art work is used throughout the book to aid the reader's imagination -- to picture now extinct California grizzlies foraging in oak savannahs, the types of wildflowers and grasses that dominated now isolated ecosystems, and the interactions across plants and wildlife throughout California's past. Even if you have never been to California, this book will enable you to view your own natural surroundings, wherever that may be, with a different perspective.
