UPDATE AUG. 2016:After spinning for eight months and branching out into art yarns, plied yarn, and novelty types, I returned to this book. The specific guidance for plying improved my technique 100% in ONE afternoon!I needed the experience and clear step by step photos to help me understand just how vital hand and finger positioning is. I own several spinning classes on Craftsy, so I know how profound the instruction can be with visual aids.My opinion of this book as more than an introduction (like a "Spinning for Dummies" kind of thing) has gone from a mere primer to one of my "keepers", along with Alden Amos' huge tome, Sarah Anderson's "Spinner's Book of Yarn Designs", Deb Menz and Spin-Off magazines.I'm glad I kept it, even now that I'm squarely spinning in the intermediate zone.Very helpful to me for the first couple of attempts at the wheel, but quickly outgrown. I recommend purchasing a class at Craftsy (Amy King's spinning class was perfect. Watch for sales. I paid only fifteen bucks!). I plan to gift this book to the next new spinner, or donate it to the library. My collection of craft books has to be kept to a manageable size, so this is not a keeper.

I now have several of the teach yourself something "visually" books, and I think they're great. Not everyone can pick up a book and learn something new, but for some of us that's the absolute best way. The two I have on spinning, this one and one on dying the yarn, are really helpful. There's lots of detail, simple explanations, and I have learned a lot from both of them. Definitely worth the purchase, and quite helpful for those of us who can learn a new skill by reading about it. I am SOOOO enjoying this process of learning to spin. Funny--something they were doing out of absolute necessity with wooly mammoth fur gazillions of years ago is still useful, fulfilling and fun today. (And not being sure how names will show up in this review process, and given the fact our account is under my husband's name, this is the Wife talking . . .)

I used this book along with some others to teach myself to spin. Very nice and handy book but I needed a couple other books to go with it to help clarify what I needed to do as I learned to spin. I gave it 4 stars because of the amount of great info. Its a favorite and a great reference book but I couldn't learn to spin from this book alone. Now that I know how to spin, I frequently look back at this book for fiber info and diferent tips and techniques.

Aube's Maple and Red Oak Top Whorl Drop Spindle This is an excellent introduction to hand spinning. The book covers kinds of spindles, kinds of fiber and how to card it, and a good visual guide on how to use the spindle. It is very thorough and as stated above a very good beginner's guide to hand spinning. The spindle above is a good illustration of the type of spindle that is used to teach the novice how to spin with a top spindle. The author also introduces and explains about bottom whorl drop spindles.

I found this is a great book for the beginning spinner. It covers both wheel & spindle spinning which is very helpful. It allows you to get a feeling for the basics.The pictures help to illustrate the text in the book. Though as always, I wish there were more images as I find I learn best visually.It certainly can't replace having someone to help you learn. But if you can't find a spinning group in your area, this is a great way to start.I also found that because it goes over different fibers and how to spin them, it will be useful beyond just the beginner.Given the amount of space devoted to pictures, do not expect this to cover everything. But I found that is was the best purchase I could have made as a beginner. I reference it again and again.

I bought this book as a gift for my friend who is learning how to spin. She was very excited to get this book. She says it is easy to follow and very helpful. I have the Teach Yourself Visually knitting and croceting books and I love them.So I knew this would be a hit as a gift!

The instructions in this book are so clear and easy to understand that I have already spun my first full skein of yarn. There are pictures for EVERYTHING! I couldn't have asked for a better book than this, it was well worth the money and then some.

Pictures are good. If you , know and small bit and are learning to handspun on your own - a good book to read and own.
