About the Author
Darrell L. Ross, Ph.D., is Professor and Department Head of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice, and Director of the Center for Applied Social Sciences (CASS) at Valdosta State University, USA. Ross worked for the Michigan Department of Corrections as an officer, cell block supervisor of mentally impaired prisoners, probation officer, and instructor in the training academy, and taught in the Police Academy at Ferris State University as a certified instructor teaching subject control techniques, human factors, mechanics of arrest, and responding to the mentally ill person. He was the Director of the School of Law Enforcement and Justice Administration at Western Illinois University and served on the faculty and as chair of the criminal justice program at East Carolina University. Ross has published five books, more than 95 articles, book chapters, and monographs, and has provided expert witness services since 1987.

Renting was easy and economical.
In decent condition
This book was exactly what I needed for my graduate class. I would recommend this book and others to all my fellow classmates.
The author tried...but that's not enough for a college-level textbook.I have read statistics, economics, and high-level math texts that throw far fewer numbers at the reader. The wording is inconsistent or improper in various places, leading me to reread sentences over and over to figure out what I'm missing. (I.e. "Study results indicated that jail inmates were more likely to prevail in cases involving [X, Y, and Z]." More likely than what? Where are the examples of cases they were less likely to prevail in?)Certain facts (not necessarily numeric ones) that I've double checked have been shown to be wrong or, again, were so poorly worded that the meaning is entirely misconstrued. I'm two chapters in, with statistics and dollar amounts included in nearly every paragraph, and have yet to come across a SINGLE illustration (graphs, charts). The information provided is useless when it cannot be retained by the student, and visual aids are critical when trying to teach a subject that requires an overarching understanding of the trends, etc.I've been making a concerted effort to read all assigned textbooks for my courses, but will be reading the bare minimum needed to answer homework questions for this course. I just need to find a better alternative resource now...
This book reads like a book about law written by a police officer.My students want to become police officers and prison guards. They are taking my civil liability class and filled out anonymous surveys. The biggest complaint is the book. The book is less than clear. It uses statistics that are mathematically meaningless. It only thinly hides its bias against attorneys. The book characterizes §1983 of the civil rights act as a vehicle for citizens to attack innocent police officers.The book does not discuss the elements of torts. Its attempts at practical advice are lost in generalities. The book does not cover the material and I seriously doubt whether the author understands the subject of torts or the subject of liability as it relates to police officers.The book, in short, is not worth reading.It certainly isn't worth making your students read it.
