Review
"There are hikes for everyone mentioned in Witt's book, including for young children, and for the family dog to tag along. He's even taken the time to categorize them in levels of difficulty for new or seasoned hikers, as well as the various distances of the routes." --KSL-TV, June 2012"This handy book has descriptions, as well as details such as elevation gain, shade, water recommendations, and length, plus driving directions to each hike. Witt also categorizes them, such as best hikes for sweeping views, hikes with waterfalls, hikes by length, and my favorite section, best hikes for children." --UtahAdventurer.com, July 2012

About the Author
Greg Witt has lived the adventures he writes about and shares with audiences around the world. His journeys have taken him to every corner of the globe. He has guided mountaineering expeditions in the Alps and Andes and paddled wild rivers in the Americas. He has dropped teams of adventurers into golden slot canyons, trudged through deep jungles in Africa, Central America, and Asia, and guided archeological expeditions across the parched Arabian Peninsula. His passion for adventure has always focused on sharing his experience with others Following degrees from the University of California and Brigham Young University, he had an early career in human resources management; but Greg prefers high-adventure to the high-rise, so decades ago he traded his wingtips for hiking boots, and has never looked back. Some weeks, Greg hikes more miles than he drives, which means he wears out his boots faster than he wears out his tires. He has crossed the Grand Canyon on foot many times, climbed Colorado's three highest peaks in three days, and in a recent summer in the Alps he hiked over 700 miles and gained nearly 100,000 vertical feet of elevation - the equivalent of climbing Everest 9 times.Greg's other titles include Exploring Havasupai: A Guide to the Heart of the Grand Canyon and Ultimate Adventures: A Rough Guide to Adventure Travel. He is the US Editor of Off the Tourist Trail: 1000 Unexpected Travel Alternatives (DK Eyewitness Travel) and a contributing editor of Make the Most of Your Time on Earth, A Rough Guide to the World.

This is my favorite hiking book and I use it at least once a week. It recommends fantastic hikes and has a very usable breakdown of hiking categories, so if I'm (for example) looking for a longer hike, I can find a bunch of them really easily and choose between them. I noticed that you can't see all of the categories in the "expanded view," so I thought it'd be helpful to list them below:Table of Contents, which lists hikes by area (i.e. Salt Lake County)Author's PicksHikes of 1-3 milesHikes of 3-6 milesHikes of 6-9 milesHikes of more than 9 milesSteep HikesHikes near streams and riversHikes with lakesHigh-Altitude Hikes (more than 10,000 feet)Hikes with scrambling or climbingBest trails for mountain bikingBest trails for road bikingHikes with waterfallsBest winter hikesHikes with historyBest hikes for childrenBest hikes for dogsPopular trailsHikes to high summits (more than 10,000 feet)Hikes with sweeping viewsYear-Round HikesBest hikes for solitudeBest hikes for wildlifeBest hikes for wildflowersBest for regular workoutsScenic hikesBest trails for runners
Book has excellent suggestions for hiking, very well organized, good variety of trails, detailed. The author provides lists of hikes that feature things like lakes, waterfalls, scrambling/climbing, streams/rivers, high-altitude, summits, sweeping views, solitude, wildlife, and wildflowers. We had a great trip and were able to plan our adventures efficiently because of this book. Unfortunately, we left it on the windshield dashboard while we were out hiking and the entire binding melted, so now it is more like a collection of files in a folder. I would have liked a list of "easy" hikes although there is a list of best hikes for children and a list of hikes between 1-3 miles which presumably were the easier hikes. I was coming from Virginia where terrain is typically less challenging than the rugged mountains out west. Some of the hikes classified as "moderate" I found to be very strenuous. The trail maps do not show topography, but there is a graph below each map showing the elevation at each point of distance along the entire hike. For each hike there is a brief paragraph about it before going in to more detail. There is also a list of key information summarized for each hike including elevation at trailhead, elevation gain, sun exposure, ability to bring dogs, time of year to go, how busy the trail is, scenery. I love this book and would highly recommend it.
Great book, great format! Lots of detail included about the hikes. Sometimes had to read between the lines, for example if the hike was exposed or not. There was a note about watching your kids but it wasn't really clear if it was dangerous or not.Key weakness are the maps. There is very little detail and no elevation lines. I learned very little about the kind of terrain I was headed into.Overall very worth purchasing. Just don't get discouraged by the first hike being 16 mi r/t. They aren't all like that :)
Maybe things were different when it was originally published but there are some small inconsistencies with hike descriptions/reviews and real life. An example is the Silver Lake hike. He says you can drive the three mile "dirt road" to the trail head. Due to several large protruding rocks, mostly due to the hundreds of ATVs that zoom up the road, only 4X4s could access it. Unless you want to hike it which my daughter and I did but with all the ATVs it may not be safe and they scare off any wildlife you'd see. Love how the hikes are organized by region.
This book is one of the best hike books I have ever bought. The reason for this is that he has all of the information right there in a "Key-At-A-Glance" section on every hike. I can instantly see if this is an easy or hard hike and how far it is as well as elevation change. I have bought a few hiking books and regretted it because they were difficult to find the type of hike I want to go on. He also has really good maps and elevation change maps. I don't know what they are called, but they are a side view showing where the elevation changes. This is really nice to get an idea of the type of hike it is. I have been on about seven of the hikes so far and have loved every one. There are easy and scenic 3 mile hikes with little elevation change to day long 13+ mile 3000'+ elevation change. I want to get to that level near the end of this season. I can't wait! Highly recommend this book if you are from Utah. I am going to try to do all of the hikes between this year and next.
If you live in or are visiting the Salt Lake City area, this book is a must have. I moved to Utah and use this almost every weekend to plan my hikes. It clearly categorizes hikes by things like difficultly level, length, dog friendly, etc. which makes planning a trip so easy. Additionally, one of the trickiest parts about finding hikes in Utah is trying to find the trailheads which are rarely well labeled. This makes it all so simple and easy and gives you a map and nice details of each hike.
I consider myself an avid hiker who knows a lot of hikes around the Salt Lake area. I know a lot of hikes listed in this book, but where it shines is in the layout - hikes are easy to locate in the book, and there is a snapshot on each hike so you can figure out how much exertion it takes. This is a very helpful guide book - and the thing I like is that it included a multitude of hikes from hard to easy and everything in between. I probably have books that covered all of the hikes listed, but this is nice to have all the hikes in one single book from Weber County to Utah county and even some basic Uinta hikes.
I look at this book at least once a week. My goal is to do all the hikes listed, and I have quite a few already crossed off. I have found all the information to be accurate and extremely helpful. I am a planner and don't like to "wing it" when I am in the backcountry. Therefore, I always read about where I am going and organize my hike accordingly. Great reference to add to your collection whether you are a newbie or seasoned hiking vet.
