Knitwear designer Epstein offers a reference book with instructions for 350 different edgings, everything from ruffles to laces and fringes to floras. The instructions are easy to follow, but it is the amazingly crisp photographs of the different edgings executed in colorful yarns and set against pure white backgrounds that will get knitters' hearts pounding. This book is beautifully illustrated with color pictures and provides instructions for creating different neckline, hem, and cuff designs, using ribbed designs, picots, lace, etc., for your knitted creations...Some are a bit over the top--like some of the ruffles for round necklines; they look more like they belong on a clown costume. However, even these would work particularly well if you want to make something for upper-class Renaissance Fair costuming. But there are so many other ideas/trims that are absolutely stunning or just downright cute that the book is a great resource...and it could even be left out as a coffee table book! I have Nicky Epstein's other "edge" books (Knitting Beyond the Edge and Knitting Over the Edge), also, and they are beautiful books as well. Admittedly, there are some duplicated ideas among the 3 books, but I still am very happy to have them all as guidelines for innovative design to help you make your very own "uniquely you" creation.
This book has a lot of great edging ideas for finishing off knitting projects to add a little elegance or flair. There are lace, cables and fringe plus more. I have used a few already. I only give it 4 stars because I am not a fan of fringe. But the book itself is nicely made, has a nice layout and is easy to read.
First, I want to say that I bought this book used, for a very low price. With that in mind, I want to say that I really like the book a lot. There are plenty of edgings - both welts and knit-on edges - that are practical and attractive. There are several that I plan to use in my designs. I do not know what the original price (new) was, so I cannot say whether or not I would be willing to pay full price for the book, but for what I paid I am extremely happy with it.
I used to work in a yarn shop. I have saved so many pamphlets and photo-copied a ton of patterns for sweaters, afghans, etc. that I would never make just to have patterns for the details. This book has helped me declutter! I can't believe that she has all of this in one book. Thank you, thank you, thank you! The patterns from "Knitting on the Edge" that I have used have all worked out. I have also easily been able to vary the patterns to work into the piece I was working on. She's made it very simple. And having worked some of the edges in - they really have made the pieces 100% richer looking. (Borrowed it from our library and had to buy my own copy.)
The variety and styles that the author has designed are numerous enough that it should satisfy a variety of tastes - it certainly earns its five stars. Nicky Epstein's unique knitting artistry is well reflected in this book. The swatches are clearly made (details of stitches are easily seen), the categories are numerous, the styles range from easy to complex work. I especially like the format of the book - layout is clean and readable (like when you have it open while knitting), and the projects in the book give you a basic idea how to use the edgings.It DEFINITELY is a good addition to one's knitting reference library. The author has a prior book with some of same edgings but this book is unique enough and full of very useful things to make the purchase well worth it.
Was surprised by how indispensable this has become - whereas before I never considered edging in my knits, this book makes it look so gorgeous, and explains things so clearly that I'm becoming a "fancy edge" fanatic as a knitter. Any of the edging techniques in here take simple knits to fabulous. Her directions and guidelines are great. It isn't often I check out a book from the library and then find I need to buy it. This has become a wonderful reference in my knitting library.
I love sweaters. I cannot knit. Thus I have no idea if the patterns are useful and accurate. I bought this book years ago for myself simply because the designs were so pretty. I paid full price. I saw this on Amazon for 5 dollars and it made a great gift for a friend that knits.
This book offers so many ideas to vary my knitting patterns to create new looks.
