Great documentary about the unsolved murders of women in Jennings, Louisiana. Photos of victims and lots of research material. Since I live in nearby Dequincy, Louisiana, this book was quite interesting. I watched news coverage and read newspaper accounts of the murders when they occurred. Amazing tales of corruption by law enforcement. It makes a person wonder how such an underworld of vice can exist in communities that are mostly inhabited by law abiding, hard working citizens. The alleged involvement of a local politician in the prostitution makes for the kind of scandal that movies are made about.

I ordered Mr. Brown's "Murder in the Bayou on my Kindle and began reading, but this is one of those books that just NEEDS to be a Hardback for me! I went the very next day and bought the hardback at my local bookstore. When I dived in to read this book, it became all encompassing and had me flipping pages back and forth because I wanted to make sure I put faces to the names to humanize these women. I was very pleasantly surprised to see how much work Mr. Brown had put into corroborating everything he wrote (i.e...legally obtaining police and court records, physically meeting and listening to the players in the underside of Jennings, LA) . Mr. Brown followed the corruption from the "wrong side of the tracks" all the way to high ranking officials in the State of Louisiana! It was pointed out the corruption crossed jurisdictions into Calcasieu Parish, which most parishioners (I'm one) already know. You will be suprised by the level of corruption, the devaluization of human lives, and the devastation of a community in the grips of those who took an Oath To Protect and Serve!

This is an interesting book about the unsolved murders of eight women in a small town in Louisiana. It is a short book, and it is less about the murders themselves than about the rampant police corruption in this town particularly and Louisiana more broadly. The writer is very clearly a journalist and his writing is concise and readable. The author does speculate somewhat, and he does rely on anonymous witnesses. Normally I find that to be somewhat off-putting in a true crime book, but he seems to have a very healthy skepticism and corroborates where possible.I've read other reviews of this book where the reviewers are frustrated by the author's very brief mention of the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, MO, calling it irrelevant or saying its inclusion is a political statement. For starters, it is mentioned almost in passing in the body of the book, and given an acknowledgment in the afterword. Second, the book is about the eight women who died, yes, but it is really about the gross negligence, incompetence, and outright corruption within the Jennings (and surrounding area) law enforcement community that has prevented the murders from being solved. The DoJ found that Ferguson was plagued with similar problems, and the issues associated with getting justice in a community where the police are operating virtually unchecked are the same.I am only giving the book 4 stars because after awhile, I found it very difficult to follow the cast of characters and their deeply interwoven lives. The beginning of the book does have a summary of who each person is, and I recommend bookmarking that, because you will need to reference it often.

Tried to listen to this on a long drive. It became redundant with repetitive narration and it was a recitation of dates, times etc, with no story woven into the narrative. It was simply too dry and, as I said, repetitive.

The facts in this book are pretty incriminating. Since I live here I know of some of the people. I would hate to think that there is corruption in our law enforcement, however I suppose I wouldn't be surprised. When I was younger I heard stories and grew up with that knowledge. But it was a different era and when police and sheriff were doing a good job, it wasn't unusual for"extras" to be given by locals. The pay was horrible (and still is) so it was lagniappe. As far as the corruption in the east side... Yeah... I'd believe that. Drugs and prostitution have gone completely rampant in the last few years but isn't that everywhere? I'm an truly praying for our new sheriff and praying that they can get a handle on things. I grieve for the families involved and hope they can get closure because the culprits should be caught and brought to justice. But if not here.. One day they WILL pay. "GOD DON'T SLEEP!" as we say down here.

Although a convoluted story with a large cast of characters, Ethan manages to stay on track in his storytelling. It is a deeply disturbing narrative, involving drugs, prostitution, deceit and layers of political corruption. I agree that it was likely NOT a serial killer. Law enforcement was not only sloppy & incompetent, but utterly uncaring when it came to investigation of these deaths. Poor women, drug addicts, & prostitutes are already downtrodden, and usually abused. So, what did their so-called protectors do but add insult to injury? And the hotel link to Big G and more powerful politicians. Wow. My stomach actually turned when I read it. I want to thank Ethan Brown for caring about these women enough to tell their stories. And for being willing to shine a light on the deep corruption that we know exists here in Louisiana. Still.

I could give this book a 10 out of 10! Loved it.. makes you think twice about trusting people in Jennings.. I'm too scared to walk down the road anymore, but shines light on these poor innocent women who deserve justice! Great work Ethan!

Enjoyed!
